This important position works as a part of the fire team and participates in all aspects of fire management including suppression, fuels projects, monitoring, and training. The incumbent will also work closely with internal and external partners to accomplish local, regional and national missions. Serves as a supervisory wildland firefighter on an engine crew. Provides technical and administrative supervision to a wildland fire engine crew, including planning work for subordinates, preparing schedules, developing performance standards and evaluating work performance. Performs and directs others in pump operations and using appropriate hoses, valves, nozzles, etc. Responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland fires. Works as a fully qualified chainsaw operator. Ensures the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch. Implements formal and informal training programs to comply with policy and regulations. Participates in crew proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques. Operates a variety of motor vehicles to transport equipment, supplies, crew members, etc. Evaluates fire situations based on fire behavior, weather, topography, fuel types and potential hazards. Area Information - Bandelier National Monument, located on the slopes of the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, is a 33,000
acre monument established to protect the Ancestral Pueblo sites found here. Bandelier includes a designated wilderness area of 23,267 acres and an 800-acre detached archeological section. The Monument preserves numerous archeological features of a late prehistoric period, which represents the transition of the Pueblo Indians from the prehistoric Ancestral Puebloan to modern traditions. Annual visitation exceeds 200,000. Bandelier is located 45 miles from Santa Fe, 32 miles from Espanola, and 12 miles from Los Alamos. The terrain is rugged but beautiful, from 5,300 to 10,199 feet with headquarters located at 6,000 feet. Summers are hot with afternoon thunderstorms being common in late summer. This position is covered by the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d) as a Primary/Rigorous Firefighter. Applicants must be 18 years of age, but not have reached their 37th birthday by the closing date of this announcement. These positions are covered by the special enhanced annuity retirement provisions for Federal Firefighters and Law Enforcement officers and have a mandatory retirement age of 57. Two exceptions are allowed:
1) an applicant has prior Federal service in documented special retirement covered position(s) sufficient to count toward 20 years of covered service on or before the mandatory retirement age of 57; or 2) an applicant is a qualified veterans' preference eligible, in which case the MEA is waived and their corresponding retirement age may be higher than 57 after completing 20 years of service. Experience:
At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience must have included:
(1) personally performing in Wildland Fire Engine Operations, and at least one of the following wildland fire-fighting functions:
Initial attack and Fire-line Suppression Operations; Prescribed Fire Operations; Helitack Operations; and (2) personally leading or supervising others in any two of the following functions:
initial attack and suppression hand-crew operations; prescribed fire operations; wildland fire engine crew operations; helitack fire crew operations; providing on-the-job training and conducting daily crew briefings, safety sessions, and/or other basic wildland fire training. OR Education:
At least one year of graduate level college education in a field directly related to the position such as a major study in forestry, fire science. A copy of your transcripts is required. OR Combination:
